Design: Can’t See Much Difference

When comes to design we talk about appearance and materials that smartphones use. As the weird notch becomes not weird at all, and edge to edge design being applied everywhere, we tend to pick the winner by the size of the screen. Both the iPhone XS Max and Huawei Mate 20 Pro are counted as big phones with the former at 6.5 inches and the later at around 6.4 inches. While, the Mate 20 Pro is calculated to have a larger screen to body ratio which is 87.66%, comparing to the 84.89% of iPhone XS Max. No doubt that both of them are built with OLED display and proved to be the best in the industry.

Performance: A12 Bionic vs. Kirin 980

The operating system of Apple has been on the top of the industry and gotten a very high reputation. Huawei Mate 20 Pro with its new Kirin 980 also satisfies users well. However, according to a benchmark test conducted by Phone Areno, Apple A12 Bionic wins over Kirin 980. Although the performances of two brands are based on different app and OS, iPhone XS Max is unmatched in this round.

Camera: Is Three Better than Two?

The biggest highlight of Huawei Mate 20 Pro lies in its extraordinary cameras. Three lenses are shaped in rectangular on the back with a 40MP wide-angle, 20MP ultra wide-angle and 8MP telephoto, the cooperation with Leica indeed makes a great improvement of Huawei camera. However, it is not the number of cameras makes the quality better, but the combination of software, hardware and skills of shooting do. iPhone XS Max features a dual 12MP cameras on the back with smart HDR, background blur and bokeh effects, it helps to record your every moment vividly as well. But if we have to pick the winner, then it gives to Mate 20 Pro.

Battery: A Whole Day + Fast Charging

We think Huawei Mate 20 Pro wins at the first sight of its battery capacity which is 4200mAh---1000mAh more than that of iPhone XS Max. But given that the Mate 20 Pro has a higher screen resolution and bigger screen-to-body ratio, we give it a draw to this round. From the official announcement, both of them are able to run a whole day with just few hours charging. The iPhone XS Max is claimed to charge 50% in 30 minutes, while the Mate 20 Pro seems to be better which can charge 70% in 30 minutes thanks to its unique fast charging technology.

Most importantly, Huawei brings us a new feature in its Mate 20 Pro—capable of charging for the second smartphone as a wireless charger. This is a feature we have never seen before in any big names. It seems to be a solution for emergency charging problem; it’s unclear so far whether it will be praised by users, but we give it a “Plus” on the counting board.

Verdict: Huawei Mate 20 Pro

With a £200 cheaper price and compatible performance overall, we recommend Huawei Mate 20 Pro for your next phone to update. However, considering the powerful operating system of Apple and you habits in iOS, iPhone XS Max is still a nice choice.
