iPhone XR Waterproof Rated

Is iPhone XR waterproof? The answer is absolutely YES! Let’s have a look.

Three New iPhones All Equipped With Waterproof Design

Three new iPhone models were announced by Apple at their "Gather Round" event in Cupertino, and they're all absolutely gorgeous phones. With bezel-less screens and polished titanium edges, the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR are truly marvels of engineering. The most impressive design is the fact that iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max earned the higher IP68 rating under IEC 60529. The iPhone XR, on the other hand, is IP67 water-resistant.

What’s the IEC 60529 Standard?

It's simply a standard published by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association.

“This standard describes a system for classifying the degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment for two conditions:

1) the protection of persons against access to hazardous parts and protection of equipment against the ingress of solid foreign objects.

2) the ingress of water. The degree of protection against these two conditions is designated by an IP Code”.

— National Electrical Manufacturers Association, IEC 60529

In short, it is a test that checks how well a device resists the elements. After a device is put to this test, it gets an IP rating for dust and water resistance.

What Does the IP Rating’s Two Numbers Mean?

The most interesting thing is that "IP" prefix are actually two separate ratings. The first digit tells you how well the device can guard against dust and solids, which means "dust-proof" rating. And the second digit tells you how well it can prevent water from entering the main enclosure, which shows the water resistant rate. The following will show a full listing for particles and water.

The First Digit---Dust-Proof Rating

Digital

Meaning

0

No protection

1

>50 mm, any large surface of the body, such as the back of a hand.

2

>12.5 mm, fingers or similar objects.

3

>2.5 mm, tools, thick wires, etc.

4

>1 mm, most wires, slender screws, large ants etc.

5

Dust protected, Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented.

6

Dust tight, No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact. A vacuum must be applied. Test duration of up to 8 hours based on air flow.

The Second Digit---Water-Resistant Rating

Digital

Meaning

0

No protection.

1

Dripping water shall have no harmful effect.

2

Vertically dripping water shall have no harmful effect with enclosure is tilted at 15°.

3

Water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60° from the vertical.

4

Water splashing against the enclosure from any direction.

5

Water projected by a nozzle (6.3mm) against enclosure from any direction.

6

Water projected in powerful jets (12.5mm nozzle) from any direction.

Powerful water jets with increased pressure.

7

Immersion, up to 1m depth for up to 30 minutes.

8

Immersion, 1m or more depth (exact details vary).

9K

Powerful high temperature water jets.

The new design of iPhone XR is splash and water resistant, with a rating of IP67, which means that it can be submerged under water up to 1m depth for up to 30 minutes. It protects against everyday spills including coffee, tea and soda.

Why Do You Need a Water-Resistant Phone?

Try to imagine how crazy it will be if you accidentally drop your phone in the toilet, or your kids spill their juice box all over it.

If you're having a bath and you really want to enjoy that great movie ... and (the phone) accidentally falls into the bath....Don’t worry, it's OK.

Which situation is easier to accept? There is no doubt that most people would like their smartphone to be waterproof against accidental water drops and sprinkles. A soaked phone or tablet has traditionally meant shelling out for a costly replacement. But new technology has moved beyond waterproof cases and "rugged" cell phones designed to withstand rough conditions.
